eXistenZ (1999), David Cronenberg

Genre: Action, Horror, Science Fiction
Overall Rating:
(out of 5)
This movie is crazy. It starts off a bit slow, and I had numerous "wtf" moments throughout the middle, but the ending is worth it. I'd recommend this movie.

The Story:
(out of 5)
1 Point: Interesting
2 Points: Original
1 Point: Unpredictable
1 Point: OMGZ
At a church, a group of intense gamers comes together to test a new game coming out called "eXistenZ." The gaming method of the future is to have a bioport installed into your back, that connects to your spinal cord, into which you "plug in" to your gaming console which is made with organic materials. You are then pretty much transported into another world.

Characters:
(out of 5)
1 Point: Well-Played
1 Point: Original
1 Point: Relatable
1 Point: Emotional Attachment
1 Point: OMGZ
Allegra Gellar (Jennifer Leigh): The creator of eXistenz, she presents the group with a game. An extremist group targets her.
Ted Pikul (Jude Law): He becomes Allegra's body guard and becomes immersed into the world of gaming, having never had a bioport installed.

Believability:
(out of 5)
1 Point: No Disbelief
1 Point: Well-Explained
1 Point: Characters Fit Conceivably
1 Point: Not Foolishly Omniscient
1 Point: OMGZ
I guess anything is possible, but I was never 100% into this movie. The reason I ended up liking it is due to the ending, but throughout I was just like "yeah, right." Its entertaining none-the-less.

Weight:
(out of 5)
1 Point: Relatable Lives
1 Point: Relatable Choices
1 Point: "Wow" Moments
1 Point: Lasting
1 Point: OMGZ
The ending is definitely weighty, and makes up for the rest of the movie. Its a common question brought up in ethics.

Visual:
(out of 5)
2 Points: Visual Quality
1 Point: Unique Visual Perspective
1 Point: Special Effects
1 Point: OMGZ
I sort of had the feel of an 80's movie when watching it. It didn't seem to have brilliant cinematography, but the gore scenes were pretty well-done.
